Teach Set Design – An Introductory Workshop is a practical, high-impact workshop that introduces students aged 11–19 to the core principles of theatrical set design.
Designed to be accessible for both specialist and non-specialist teachers, this workshop guides students through the role of the set designer, exploring how designers interpret text, communicate mood, theme and setting, and develop clear, purposeful design ideas. Using A Midsummer Night’s Dream as a central stimulus (or adaptable to your chosen set text), students investigate professional designers, learn six key set design fundamentals, and apply these through hands-on tasks including mood boards, model-making or installation work.
The resource includes a detailed workshop plan, ready-to-use slide deck with teacher notes, student handouts, a ready-to-teach slide deck and a one-hour CPD talk-through video, enabling confident delivery straight away. The session can be used as a standalone introduction to set design or embedded within a wider design or technical theatre scheme of learning across Key Stage 3, GCSE and post-16 study.
Ideal for classroom teaching, enrichment days and technical theatre or drama clubs.
