Teach Lighting Design – An Introductory Workshop is a practical, high-impact workshop that introduces students aged 11–19 to the fundamental principles of theatrical lighting design.

Designed for both specialist and non-specialist teachers, this workshop explores the role of the lighting designer and how lighting communicates information, mood, atmosphere and emotion to an audience. Using A Midsummer Night’s Dream as a central stimulus (or adaptable to your chosen set text), students investigate professional lighting designers, explore the impact of colour, direction and intensity, and experiment practically with lighting ideas through structured design challenges.

The session can be used as a standalone introduction to lighting design or embedded within a wider design or technical theatre scheme of learning across Key Stage 3, GCSE and post-16 study. It is also ideal for enrichment days and technical theatre or drama clubs.

What’s included

  • A detailed workshop plan (approx. 2 hours of practical learning)

  • A ready-to-teach slide deck with clear teacher commentary and notes – perfect for non-specialists

  • Student handouts and lighting design challenge cards
