Teach Costume Design – An Introductory Workshop is a practical, high-impact workshop that introduces students aged 11–19 to the fundamental principles of theatrical costume design.
Designed for both specialist and non-specialist teachers, this workshop explores the role of the costume designer and how costume communicates character, mood, status and style. Using A Midsummer Night’s Dream as a central stimulus (or adaptable to your chosen set text), students develop design ideas from text and character, learn key costume design fundamentals, and translate concepts into clear, labelled costume designs through hands-on practical exploration.
The session can be used as a standalone introduction to costume design or embedded within a wider design or technical theatre scheme of learning across Key Stage 3, GCSE and post-16 study. It is also ideal for enrichment days and technical theatre or drama clubs.

A detailed workshop plan (approx. 2 hours of practical learning)
